More Scraps on Monday!

More of my #scrappytripalong.  I am loving making these blocks and loving playing around with placement.  I also am enjoying figuring out how to fully use my camera (yes I got some batteries!).  I have a couple more blocks to make to complete this quilt, but I think I am going to make all the blocks I have cut and then put them into 2 quilts.  Meanwhile, I am enjoying the process…which is what I wanted to do!

Snowy Saturdays

Happy Saturday ya’ll!

2013-02-02 15.32.16

This is a picture from my bedroom window.  I know it doesn’t look like a lot of snow, but it has been snowing since last night.  And it’s supposed to continue to snow all day and night and all day tomorrow.  So, I figured it would be a good weekend to stay inside and sew!

I started working on my 2 inch #scappytripalong quilt.  I am kinda methodically in how I sew.  I use (and reuse) little zipper top baggies to put my blocks in.  So, before I even started to sew any strips together, I put together all my blocks individually in bags. That way, if I wanna just grab a few and do some, I don’t have everything laying out.  Anyway, all of that to say this, I made 5 blocks today.

A close up

My blocks are truly scrappy, but I am loving the way they are turning out.

I also found a recipe for homemade refried beans over at Sewfrench.  It is her friends recipe, which you can see her blog post about the recipe here.

I followed the recipe, with the exception that I added a whole jalapeno, not just a 1/2, and mine were done in like 4 hours, but my crock pot cooks fast.

This made nine 1/2 cup servings.  I froze most of them individually.  They are delicious and so much more flavorful than store-bought.

Strips are cut!

2013-01-27 16.45.20

Yesterday, I finished cutting the 2 1/2 in strips from my stash/scraps into 16 inch lengths for my #scrappytripalong quilt.   All together, I have 241 strips!!!!  That’s enough to make over 40 blocks.  But I love this pattern and I love scrappy quilts so I might make a couple from my strips.  Or…I may just make it big enough for my bed, which is a queen.  I know I said just last week that I will never make queen size quilt again, but, we will see.

Today, I am going to spend the day catching up on my reading (and maybe DVR…we’ll see).  I subscribe to several magazines and I need to get them read and ready to pass on.  My Mom and I swap magazines.  The only ones I don’t pass on are my quilting ones.  Although, I am thinking about letting some of them go as well, as I feel like there isn’t a lot of quilts I have made from the magazines I have and with all the blogs I subscribe to, well…I have MORE than enough inspiration.  Here is the stack I have to read today.

On a side note, here are my reading companions for the day.  I couldn’t resist snapping a quick picture with my phone.

And one more thing.  I downloaded to my phone this cool app called Photo Grid.  You can take your photos and make them into a mosaic.  I have been having fun doing that with all my different pictures on my phone.  Here is one of some of the quilts I made last year.

Scrappy Strips!

I was trying to figure out what I finished this week…

2013-01-24 18.24.17

Does it count that I finished cutting my scraps into 2 1/2 inch strips for my #scrappytripalong?  I have to cut them into 16 inch strips and then start sewing, but at least I can put my scraps away.  I can’t wait to start sewing the blocks.

I love hexagons!

For so long, I have been wanting to attempt a hexagon quilt.  I am not sure what about hexagons intrigue me…but they do.  So…last year when I ran into some charm packs on sale at Craftsy, I knew that it would be the right fabric for my hexagons!  2013-01-22 18.44.05

I just love this fabric!  It’s Curiosities by Nancy Halvorson for Benartex.  So…last night I decided to break out my hexi template and start cutting.

2013-01-22 18.43.53

At first, I thought “Oh wow, this is gonna take me forever.” And because I am a new quilter (sort of) I didn’t think that charm packs are probably not the best cut of fabric for hexagons.  But whatever.  I ended up cutting them in stacks….and I cut 4 charm packs (40 pieces each).

And because I am crazy about not wasting anything, I saved the itty bitty scrap pieces.

Pillow Shams

Today I finished up the pillow shams that match my Mom’s queen size quilt.  I am pleased with how they turned out.

I also worked on some more of my Moda honey bun #scrappytripalong blocks.

And when I was bored with that, I cut some more fabric strips for the 2 1/2 inch #scrappytripalong quilt I haven’t started sewing yet.

The best part about playing with scraps is that it creates more scraps for the other 2 scrappy quits I want to make.

Wednesday’s WIP Update!

2013-01-15 18.26.34

Last night I began cutting strips for my #scrappytripalong quilt.  I started one this weekend with a Moda honey bun (that is 1 inch strips).  I am still planning on making a 2 inch quilt too.  Soooo, last night I started cutting strips.  I want to get all the strips cut from the fabric I have thus far, and then start sewing.  I am not sure how many strips I have, but I am really excited about the fabric and how it’s going to turn out!  Here is a picture of my stack of strips:

2013-01-15 18.29.26

I still have a lot of fabric to cut yet, and this stack isn’t cut into the 16 inch strips, just 2 1/2 inch strips of varied lengths.  I can’t wait to get them all cut so I can see what I have.

Also, I found a really awesome other scrappy quilt that I want to make over at Quilting and Other Craft Therapy.  It’s a string block quilt, and I know I have a lot of string strips!  Also, I have been inspired to start looking for a used in good condition more advanced sewing machine.  Mine just doesn’t have the capabilities that I need or want.

So, here are my projects I am working on:

*Moda honey bun #scrappyquiltalong quilt

*#scrappyquiltalong quilt

*My Mom’s queen size quilt

*Granny square project.

That’s it!  I am linking up to Freshly Pieced.

Going on a Scrappy Trip

I am so excited!  I started sewing some #scrappytripalong blocks today.  I did a few from the Moda honey bun I am using.  I really like it and it’s turning out cute.  The blocks are 6 x 6, not 12 x 12 like the tutorial says.  Working with 1 inch squares is much more difficult than the 2 inch ones in the tutorial.  You can find the tutorial for the #scrappytripalong here.

Here are a few of my blocks.  I apologize for the pictures, I have have have to get some batteries for my camera and stop using my phone.

Fun with Fabric

I love Saturdays.  When I moved, I decided that no matter what, I would clean my house on Friday nights so that I’d have all weekend to do whatever I wanted.  And that has been one of the best decisions I have ever made!  Today, after visiting my new great-niece Jaidyn for a little while, I came home and sorted through my scraps to see what I had that I could use for my scrappytripalong quilt.  This is what I found:

2013-01-12 16.17.46

The fabrics in the basket are just my scraps that I need to sort through to see if they are okay for the quilt.  The other two bags in front are scraps that I acquired from other people.  I have a few more bags of scraps coming.  Like I mentioned yesterday, I am not going to run to get this done, but just take my time and see where it leads.  I am very excited about going through my fabrics and seeing what will work.

Last night as I was laying in bed, I remembered that I had a Moda Honey Bun in my stash that I thought I could use to make a smaller version of a scrappytripalong quilt.  I am using the Simple Abundance by Bonnie and Camielle for Moda Fabrics collection to make a smaller block size.  I have all the strips cut, I just need to start sewing…which I might do tomorrow.

I love this fabric collection! I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
