Book Review: Unglued Devotional by Lysa TerKeurst

_240_360_Book.765.cover

I recently reviewed Unglued Devotional by Lysa TerKeurst.  I had been looking for a devotional that would meet the need of my heart as a busy woman.  I personally think that as women, we strive to keep it all together.  Managing our homes, taking care of the kids, and keeping our relationship with our spouses can exhaust us.  Through in friendships, extended family, church functions, and work or career obligations—we can’t do it, but we surely try…all while being the perfect size with the perfect hair with the perfect clothes….and the perfect fake smile….while deep inside we are falling about, unable to achieve PERFECTION.  (Which was the whole reasoning behind this blog, living in freedom…Simply Delighting).  This devotion address and refreshes our spirits and allows us as women to be as the title suggests, Unglued.

I would highly, highly recommend this devotion to women who need a time out from their world to spend 15 minutes refreshing their spirit and connecting with the Lord.  It is amazing.  It is a MUST READ.

Book Review: All for a Song by Allison Pittman

978-1-4143-6680-7

I recently read the book All for a Song by Allison Pittman.  This book was awesome.  The style of the book is sort of a flashback.  The main character, Dorothy Lynn, now in her elder years and ailing in her health, remembers a time in her life when she chased after what she felt was God’s plan for her.  Growing up in a rural setting in what seems like the 1920’s, Dorothy Lynn embarks on a journey across the country travelling with a well-known evangelist.  Dorothy Lynn goes against everything she’s ever been taught, and as she does, she learns some valuable lessons about life, faith, and herself.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves to read period type novels that integrates faith and living.  It is the type of book that captivates you and is very hard to put down.

Book Review: Wishing on Willows by Katie Ganshert

book-wishingonwillowsI recently read Wishing on Willows by Katie Ganshert.  I loved this book.  It was easy to read and was hard to put down.  The book is about a widow that runs a cafe, and her journey of healing and new beginnings.  She meets and slowly falls in love with the representative of the development company that is looking to purchase her cafe and tear it down to build some condos.  Through tragedy, triumph and relying on the Lord, they both come to the place where they are able to move past their individual pasts, and look towards a future together.  This book is perfect to read in a weekend, on a trip, or the beach!  I highly recommend it.

I recently read the book The 5 Money Personalities by Scott and Bethany Palmer.  This book was by far one of the most helpful, resourceful books I have ever read.  While it is geared towards teaching couples how to manage their finances, it is useful for anyone.  We all know that one of the major issues in any relationship is money, and how to manage it.  This couple give practical tips and advice on managing and communicating about all things surrounding finances.  It is definitely an eye opener!!!!  I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book Review: Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life by Jeff Goins

13585813

I recently read Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life by Jeff Goins.  This book was dynamic, energizing and convicting.  The author challenges you to look at your life and how to live it with purpose.  How do you life a life with no regrets while pursing the calling of your life?  I was challenged, convicted and changed.  It was exactly the “wake up call” that most of us that are relentlessly pursuing what God has called us to do need to keep going.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that is dissatisfied with the status quo of their lives.  You will not regret reading this book.

I received this book free to review from Moody Publishers.

Book Review: Twice a Bride by Mona Hodgson

13532285

I recently completed the book Twice a Bride by Mona Hodgson.  This was a charming, easy to read novel.  It is the story of artist and widow Willow, who sets forth to chase after her dreams in a new town, beginning a new life.  As she does, she discovers much more than she expected.  Additionally, her faith is encouraged and developed as she encounters the twist and turns of life.  It is the fourth book in a series, but it stands alone on its own and doesn’t require the other books to understand or read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable, leisurely read.  Before I knew it I was half way through the book.  I personally loved it.

Book Review: Yours is the Day, Lord Yours in the Night by Jeanie and David Gushee

_200_360_Book.719.cover

I recently received my copy of Yours is the Day, Lord, Yours is the Night by Jeanie and David Gushee.  This book is a morning and evening prayerbook.  I had been looking for something quick to read in the mornings before work and at night before bed.  Something simple but something poignant; something challenging but something encouraging.  This book is exactly that.  I have read several days, and it is perfect for all of the things I wanted.  It is a series of prayers and encouragement from some of the old greats of the faith…you know, those that walked before us and struggled and wrestled with God in desperate times, those who faith was tested and perfected, those wise sages of Christianity that we all know and are the rocks of our history.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something quick and easy to read, but that stays with you all day as morsels to chew on and process and apply to your daily life.

Book Review: Call of a Coward by Marsha Moston

The latest book I have read is Call of a Coward by Marsha Moston.

_200_360_Book_667_cover

I was initially intrigued by this book because it is about how process the author goes through when her family moves to Guatemala as full-time missionaries.  The author shares stories of the time leading up to the move, getting acclimated to her new surroundings and culture, and the changes and transitions God brings her through (as well as her family).  She shares stories and insights about how God uses this experience to draw her closer to Him, and how He changes her heart.  While it was a good read, I wouldn’t say it was the best book I have ever read.  I found it interesting to hear about the stories and experiences, but there was just something missing.  I would recommend it, but it’s not on my top list of great reads.

Book Review: Sisterchicks in Gondolas by Robin Jones Gunn

What a great read!  I recently completed the book Sisterchicks in Gondolas by Robin Jones Gunn and I am so happy to say I LOVED THIS BOOK!!

books

This book shares the adventure that Jenna and Sue, the two main characters embark upon as they spend a week in Venice, Italy cooking and serving a group of ministry leaders gathered for a conference.  As they cook, serve and explore the city, they also embark on a spiritual journey individually that opens up places in their hearts and lives to allow God to minister to them and others.  While the book had spiritual depth, it wasn’t too heavy but a great story to read.  The sisterchicks hit a place that is real that women (and people) can relate to.  Both Jenna and Sue each had their own insecurities, hang ups, and baggage, but they learned through several situations how God can use us even when we feel ill-equipped and unusable.  I can’t say again  how much I loved this book and recommend it highly.

Book Review: Dear Deb by Margaret Terry

I just finished reading Dear Deb by Margaret Terry.  I think it’s the fastest I have ever read a book.  I got it in the mail yesterday and started it last night and finished it this morning while I waited for my car to get front and rear brakes.

2012-12-04%2014.27.47[1]

Dear Deb is a series of letters from Terry to a woman named Deb in her church that is dying from stage 4 lung cancer.  After being invited to a prayer group to specifically pray for Deb, Deb asks all the attendees to help her stay encouraged to believe for her miracle.  Terry begins to write her emails with encouraging stories from her own life.  Memories from her childhood all the way through to her present life give glimpses of small everyday instances of God’s handiwork and providence.

This book really surprised me.  When I started it, I thought it was going to be boring and hard to read.  Once I got into the book, I found that it was easy to read and the stories not only were entertaining, but also very touching.  They are filled with life lessons and moments of pure divine interventions.  It is the perfect book for the beach or a rainy day curled up under a blanket. I highly recommend it.
